Single mom established Schiller Park day care center

When Lori Magnifico-Purta found herself as a single mother in 1997, she didn’t want to put her daughter in a traditional day care while she went to work.

So, she started her own day care facility.

Now called “A Karrasel Day Care,” Magnifico-Purta opened Magnifico’s Playhouse in Schiller Park. The facility serves kids from Franklin Park, Schiller Park and beyond.

It’s hard going back to school as an adult learner, but if you’re a single parent, if you’re battling cancer, if you’re working multiple jobs, if you’ve been laid off, or if you are trying to realize dreams you never thought possible, the challenges may seem insurmountable. Charlene Clay and Stephanie Taylor are two single moms who have been meeting those challenges head on, and making ground. Their load hopefully became a little lighter this week when they were awarded the Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship for lifelong learners.

With husbands, big houses, fancy cars and elbow-rubbing dinners, Jeannette Dirksen and Melissa Kieling of Westlake Village thought they “were living the dream” until they found themselves as single moms raising their children, five between the both of them.

“Sadly (we) both went through terrible divorces,” recalled Dirksen, 42, mother of a 10-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy.

Little did they know the experience would spark an idea for their own business.
